The historic core of the estate
Burley on the Hill was rebuilt from 1694 by Daniel Finch, 2nd Earl of Nottingham, one of the most powerful statesmen of his age. The Great Staircase and Library, at its centre, escaped the fire that destroyed the rest of the house's interior in 1908. Stone floors and vaulted ceilings made this wing fireproof and kept it standing.
Its walls and ceiling carry baroque murals by Gerard Lanscroon, the Flemish decorator behind state rooms at Windsor Castle and Hampton Court Palace, the only domestic scheme by his hand known to survive. There won't be another one to buy.
